Hey mama, let’s talk about that diaper bag. If you’re anything like me, when you first packed it, you probably threw in everything but the kitchen sink—just in case, right? But after a few outings where I felt like a pack mule, I quickly realized: more stuff doesn’t mean more prepared—it just means more to carry.
So, let’s lighten the load! Here are four things you don’t actually need in your diaper bag—plus some easy swaps to keep things simple, stress-free, and organized.
1. Butt Cream
Yes, diaper rash cream is a must-have—but does it need to be in your bag at all times? Probably not. Most diaper changes happen at home, and your baby probably doesn't have an active diaper rash all of the time. So keep the full-size tube there and toss a travel-size one in your car or stroller caddy if you’re worried about needing it on the go.
2. A Nursing Cover
If you love using one, go for it! But if it’s just taking up space, know that you don’t need it. A lightweight muslin blanket or even your own sweatshirt can double as coverage in a pinch. And if you’re comfortable nursing without one? Even better—one less thing to carry!
3. Extra Clothes (All of Them)
Yes, blowouts happen. But you don’t need three extra outfits for every outing. Stick to one weather-appropriate spare and, if your baby is known for record setting blow outs like mine, leave an extra set in the car for backup.
4. Bulky Blankets
Unless you’re heading out for a long day or a chilly evening, you can skip the heavy blanket. A compact, multi-use muslin blanket works just as well and takes up way less space. I always keep a blanket in the car, but rarely need it in my bag.
Why Overpacking Doesn’t Help
Let’s be real—lugging around a heavy, overstuffed bag while also juggling a baby (or a toddler, or both) is not fun. Overpacking leads to:
❌ A sore shoulder from carrying way too much
❌ A black hole of a bag where you can’t find anything
❌ More feelings of overwhelm as a mom–the physical load and the mental load are totally connected, at least they are for me.
So what’s the fix? Packing smarter, not heavier.
Enter: The Poppy Bag
That’s exactly why I created The Poppy Bag—a minimalist, crossbody-friendly diaper bag that holds the essentials without the extra bulk. It’s got just enough room for what you actually need (like diapers, wipes, and a spare onesie) and keeps everything organized with pockets for easy access.
No more digging, no more shoulder pain, no more carrying things “just in case” that never get used. Just a bag that helps you feel prepped, put together, and ready for anything.
